Computer networks can be defined as an inter-connection of “autonomous computers”. Two computers are said to be inter-connected when they are able to exchange information.
Exchange of information can be done via copper wires, fiber optics, microwaves and communication satellites.
The word “autonomous computers” refer to the fact that there must be no master/slave relation between the computers in the network.
There is always confusion between a computer network and a distributed system. In a computer network all the work like processing, transfer of files, logics etc. has to be done explicitly by the users. Where as in a distributed system all the work is automated. The difference between them doesn’t lie in hardware but it lies only in software. A DS is software built on top of a network.
