In order to make renovation in my house, I will begin by the kitchen. I have to put a new wallpaper and I was wondering if I have to remove the vinyl wallpaper that is already on all the kitchen's walls. May I put the new wallpaper on the old one?

Putting new wallpaper over the old one will save you a few hours of work, but you may regret it very soon. It might not be a nice job to do, but I believe it is far better to remove the old one before putting the new one on. You can go in any renovation store or at your local tool rental store to rent a steamer that will do the job right in a few hours. After the old paper has been removed, you can proceed with the new one and the look will be improved.

Putting new wallpaper over old one is feasible, assuming of course the old one is not embossed, but it’s not advisable. You may get a good result at first but problems can eventually come up. Since you’re remodeling your home I’m sure you want the final look to be at par with your dream so it’s wiser to take a few hours to remove the old wallpaper and start anew. It’s not so hard to do and you have many options available. You can of course rent a professional steamer from any hardware store such as Home Depot, or from your local tool rental company. The cost is affordable since you’ll need the machine for only a couple of hours. You can also use a liquid peeler sold especially for that purpose. I found that using a sponge to soak the old wallpaper is more effective that spraying the product on; you then use a scrapper to remove it. There’s an even simpler and cheaper way that I’ve tried and found amazingly effective. In a spraying bottle you mix one measure of water for one measure of fabric softener; any brand will do. You then spray the old wallpaper, soak it further with a sponge and then use the scrapper for the finishing. Your walls will not only be wiped clean, they’ll smell good as well.
