AnswerThe first day of the summer 2009 generally refers to the summer solstice of this year. The Northern Hemisphere had the summer solstice on June 21 at 1:45 A.M. EDT. The word ‘solstice’ is actually derived from a Latin word. ‘Sol’ in Latin means ‘sun’, whereas ‘stice’ in Latin means ‘to stand still’. During this time the days are considered to be longer than the nights.
The ancient people were spell bounded by this phenomenon of the sun. So they used to celebrate this day in a special way. The Celts & Slavs, for instance, celebrated this day with dancing and bonfires with the intention to boost up the sun’s energy. The Chinese on the, other hand, celebrated this day to honor the Chinese goddess of light, known as Li.
Like every year, even this year the first day of the summer 2009 was celebrated whole heartedly in England at Stonehenge and Avebury to welcome the sunrise during the summer solstice.
