One of the major problems that companies have faced in valuation is valuation of intangible assets. I was forever unclear on what intangible assets are. Can anyone in this forum help me?

AnswerAn asset whose value is attached to a claim for future benefits is called an Intangible Asset. These are assets which cannot be seen or physically touched. Intangible assets are created over a period of time.
Intangibles can be classified into legal intangibles and competitive intangibles. Copyrights, patents, trademarks and goodwill are classified as legal intangibles. They are generally called as intellectual property which provides legal property rights in the court of law. Technical know-how, knowledge etc form the competitive intangibles. These do not generate legal rights.
