A lot of websites offer free knitting patterns for the whole family. You may find knitting patterns for sweater, hat, coat, jacket, socks, pull over, etc. Here is a nice website where you will find a lot of different knitting patterns for children, babies and adults: knittingpatterncentral.com.

Every category has a few dozen different patterns with the listing of material and all the information you need to knit what you wish. You will also find a tips and tricks section you can refer to if you have some difficulties with a pattern.
