I am looking for a cheap hotel in the montreal area (not too far from downtown, if possible). What do you suggest? And what are the prices right now?

AnswerRight now is the low season in Montreal so you'll probably find affordable Hotel.
I personally suggest you Hotel Du Fort which is located downtown next to Peel metro.
It is very nice, affordable and the food tastes really great. It also has a gym. Since it located directly downtown, you will be able to go shopping easily and you will also near theaters, restaurants and entertainment.
To save even more I suggest you to tell the receptionist if you work for a government or a big business as you may save a lot of big bucks. CAA and AAA members can also get a 10% discount during their stay. They also offer a loyalty program and your tenth stay is free.
Right now, if you make your reservation through the Internet, you will get a 30% reduction.
